Alzheimer’s disease has moved up to be the sixth leading cause of death in the United States based on new figures released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics. Alzheimer’s, previously ranked seventh, has now passed Diabetes to claim the number six spot while Diabetes has fallen to number seven. The report estimates that 74,632 Americans died from Alzheimer’s Disease in 2007, the year from which the latest report was generated. How sad for all those Americans who succumbed to this devastating illness and for all their loved ones. Will the trend of Alzheimer’s increasing as a cause of death continue? Only time will tell, but I suspect that it will unfortunately.
