Reflections on the solar eclipse

The Solar Eclipse got me thinking …

The Solar Eclipse reminded me of Sting lyricsI was lucky enough to round up some solar eclipse viewing glasses just as the big event was taking place, thanks to a colleague with an extra pair (thanks Mark). I gazed in awe for a full thirty minutes as the moon’s shadow swept across the Midwest obliterating 96% of the sun in central Illinois. When the light dimmed and the shadows disappeared, the buzz of the cicadas reached its crescendo. The mosquitoes must have come out too because I discovered a bite on my leg.

As I marveled at the spectacle of my first solar eclipse, I tried to recall if I’ve ever witnessed this natural phenomenon before. That led me to wonder if I’ll ever see another one in my lifetime, which made me realize how fleeting life really is for us insignificant humans in this massive galaxy of ours.

These deep reflections on the sun and the moon also reminded me of song lyrics by Sting. To be honest, almost everything reminds me of one Sting song or another, sorry! A few lines from I was Brought to My Senses seemed especially relevant during the solar eclipse and kept replaying in my mind:

And we’d be like the moon and sun
And when our courtly dance had run
Its course across the sky
Then together we would lie
–Sting

What did I tell you? Perfect song lyrics for the occasion and life and death reflections, huh? What were you thinking about while you watched the total solar eclipse of 2017?
